First Bioacoustic Signatures Received from the Azores BOMBYX Deployment
The AZORES team has officially analyzed the first acoustic signals transmitted from the newly deployed BOMBYX EUROPAM ACOREZ system off the coast of the Azores. Recorded across a -channel hydrophone array, the initial data confirms high-quality detection capabilities and transfered to the CIAN.LIS lab server.
Key Findings
Clear Bioacoustic Signals: The 4-channel recording captures a distinct series of impulsive echolocation clicks with an inter-click interval of approx 0.53 Hz repetition rate).
High Multi-Channel Coherence: The primary acoustic event appears synchronously across all four channels, allowing for accurate time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) directional tracking.
Likely Species Identification: Based on pulse structure, cadence, high-frequency energy concentration (60 kHz), and regional location, the signature strongly points to a Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) foraging at depth.
This first dataset validates our real-time acoustic pipeline as we prepare for expanded deployments across the Mediterranean and Arctic
